Dear Messy Friends,
We’ve just celebrated Pentecost, when we remember the Holy Spirit coming to Jesus’ friends and helping them to spread the stories of Jesus all over the world. In Bristol, The Methodist Church chose this point to starting thinking about ten Holy Habits (www.holyhabits.co.uk) we can develop, to bring us closer to each other and to God. The first of these is Eating Together, something we do at Messy Church all the time! Jesus spent so much time talking and teaching his friends during meals, revealing how we should treat each other and even a little about God’s nature during these conversations over food. Jesus said:
“The Son of Man came eating like other people and drinking wine. And you say, ‘Look at him! He eats too much and drinks too much wine! He is a friend of the tax collectors and “sinners”!’ But wisdom is shown to be right by the things it does.”
Luke 7: 34-35 (International Children’s Bible)
People thought Jesus ate and drank too much, and didn’t teach enough, but it was through these everyday acts that he was able to talk to everyone.
This month at Messy Church we’re going to be looking at the Holy Habit of Eating Together. We’ll be walking on eggs (!), flinging fruit in a catapult, toasting food and flapping fishes. We’ll then join together for a period of worship, where we’ll be talking about 5,000+ hungry people and why we should eat together, with a celebration of our great big God. We’ll follow this with a yummy meal together, where we can talk about what we’ve learnt and if we think we can change how we do things.
We hope you can join us for what will be a very fun time!
Messy blessings
